- The colonies and territories are an easy target
- Many American settlers are already claiming land south of the great lakes

- Fenians opposed British rule over Ireland
- The Fenians believed that the British Colonies were vulnerable and planned to take them hostage
How did it help Confederation ?
With the Fenians planning more raids and attacks, John A. Macdonald wanted to unite the colonies so they could form a stronger military. The border between the US and Canada is large, which means a large military is needed for protection.Macdonald knew that Britain would stop coming to Canada's defense sooner or later, so he used the Fenian Raids as another reason to unite the colonies.
