The Pros and Cons of Hiring a Resume Writer

Thinking about hiring a professional resume writer? In this guide, we dive into where to find one — and whether it’s really worth it.

2 years ago   •   7 min read

Okay, let’s be real: Nobody actually enjoys putting together a resume. It’s stressful, time-consuming, and there’s no guarantee of a payoff at the end.

Which is exactly what makes resume writing services so tempting. After all, if you could pay a few bucks to skip the whole process and get a professional-caliber resume at the end of it, why not?

That’s exactly the question we’re about to answer — along with where to find a legitimate resume writer and what to expect if you do hire one.

Is a professional resume writer worth it?

Should I hire a resume writer? There’s no single “yes or no” answer. Like any service that costs money, whether it’s worthwhile to hire a professional resume writer comes down to what you want out of it — and what you’re willing to give up.

To help you make that decision, here are some of the benefits (and potential downsides) when considering if resume writers are worth it.

Hiring a resume writer: Pros vs Cons

The benefits of hiring a professional resume writer seem obvious on the surface — saving time and effort while getting a better-quality product at the end of it. But, as the saying goes, everything has a price … and we aren’t just talking about money.

Pro: It’s convenient

Con: It’ll cost you

Professional resume services can cost anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars . Found a cheaper alternative? “You get what you pay for” is a cliché for a reason — and in this case, it’s very true.

Pro: It lets you skip most of resume writing process

Con: You’ll need to be more involved than you think

Resume writers can’t simply build a resume from scratch. You’ll still need to provide them with information, including your job history, educational background , and accomplishments . You may also end up needing more than one resume — at least, if you’re applying for more than one job, which you probably are. That means you’ll be tailoring your own resumes anyway, or you’ll be racking up additional fees for a resume writer to do it for you.

Then there’s the initial vetting process, ongoing collaboration, feedback, and revisions. By the time it’s finished, it’s unlikely you’ll have saved much time or effort; instead, you could have simply plugged the same information into a template and saved yourself several hundred dollars.

Pro: There’s less time and effort required

Con: It isn’t an overnight process

Don’t expect a brand new resume in a matter of hours — a week or two is more realistic. Also factor in 1-2 initial phone calls (yes, calls — writing a resume takes a lot of back and forth, including information that can’t easily be conveyed over email) as well as multiple revisions. Some resume writing services may offer a quicker turnaround if you’re in a hurry, but don’t expect the rush option to come cheap.

Pro: You can look for a certified professional

Con: Not all resume writers are qualified

How do most resume writers get started? By deciding to write resumes. There are no official qualifications needed to become a resume writer, and the truth is that most resume writers don’t have backgrounds as recruiters or hiring managers.

You can look for resume writers who are affiliated with the National Resume Writers Association or who possess Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW) certification, but even then, there’s no way to know exactly what you’re paying for. CPRW doesn’t require any kind of industry background to qualify — it's just a couple of short online courses and a test. No one's actually a hiring manager with experience.

Pro: A professional resume writer may do a better job

Con: … And then again, maybe not

Nobody knows your background and accomplishments better than you. Even if you supply them with detailed information, resume writers still don’t know exactly what you’ve accomplished or what skills you possess. This could mean that genuine accomplishments are left off your resume or — more likely — that others are embellished or even made up entirely. This could get you in serious trouble at the interview stage, so you’ll still need to go over the final product with a fine-tooth comb.

Keep in mind that resume writers are rarely current practitioners , and they’re even less likely to be familiar with your particular industry. This means that, even if you’re not confident in your writing abilities, you probably still have a better chance of writing a good resume than someone who’s never worked in the field. This is especially true if you work in a niche industry with its own hiring standards (like academia) or in a field that’s newer or constantly changing (like marketing, social media, or anything tech-driven).

Pro: Experienced resume writers can help if you’re not confident in your writing abilities

Con: Some hiring managers might see it as cheating

It isn’t illegal to hire a resume writer, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best idea. If your resume is written very differently to your other written communication, hiring managers may figure out that you didn’t write it yourself. Some may not care … but others will.

As a general rule, you should avoid hiring a resume writer:

  • If you’re applying for a job where communication skills are important. Recruiters will be looking at your resume as evidence of your writing skills, which means it’s probably not a good idea to outsource it.
  • For your cover letter . Even more so than a resume, your cover letter needs to be a reflection of who you are and how you communicate, so never hire someone else to write it.

Pro: It’s a good way to get started

Con: There are easier (and cheaper) alternatives

Think professional resume writers must know something you don’t? Not necessarily. In fact, resume writers use Resume Worded to help their clients — we support recruiters, careers coaches , and resume writers as well as job seekers. Our suite of free tools is available to everyone, and our Pro plan offers unlimited templates, uploads, feedback, and reviews. The best part? You can access it directly as a job seeker, and for a fraction of the cost of hiring a resume writer.

Where to find a resume writer

If you’ve considered both sides and decided to hire a resume writer, here are some tips on where to start and how to make the process as smooth as possible.

  • Decide what kind of resume writing service you actually need. Do you want someone to hold your hand through the entire job application process? Figure out how to turn your duties into accomplishments? Give your existing resume a quick once-over?
  • Decide on your budget. Resume writing services aren’t cheap — but there are low-budget options available that won’t sacrifice quality.
  • Be specific. If you’re serious about hiring a professional resume writer, don’t just Google “resume writing service” and call it a day. Instead, use keywords specific to the role or industry you’re applying for.
  • Focus on finding a professional resume writer in your niche. Generalist resume writers are likely to know even less about what hiring managers are looking for than you do.
  • Choose a resume writer who’s actually worth the money. Not sure how to tell? Look for a combination of industry background, recruitment experience, and proven results.
  • Never hand over your money without knowing exactly what you’re getting in return. A good resume writer should offer to set up a call to make sure they understand your experience and professional goals — and you understand the process — before you put anything in writing.
  • Check the terms and conditions. Look specifically for things like unlimited revisions, which will prevent you from paying for something you’re not 100% happy with.
  • Don’t put too much stock in money-back guarantees. Most resume writing services will offer additional rewrites instead of an actual refund or insist on (often unreasonably) strict terms and conditions to qualify.
  • Put together as much information as you can in advance. Professional resume writers aren’t wizards — they won’t know anything about your background, experience, or accomplishments unless you tell them.
  • Consider the alternatives. There are ways of getting the same results for a fraction of the cost — or even for free!

Alternatives to hiring a resume writer

Before you go all in on hiring a resume writer, check out some of these free alternatives.

If you need help creating a resume from scratch: Download a resume template

If you’re considering splurging on a resume designer, know this: The best resume is a simple resume. Instead of paying for an expensive graphic-based resume that most hiring managers don’t want (and Applicant Tracking Systems can’t read) , download a free, ready to use ATS resume template . Simply paste in your information and start applying straight away!

If you don’t know what to write: Check out industry-specific resume examples

Once you’ve chosen your template, head over to our resume examples page, with 250+ full resume examples from dozens of industries. With just a little tweaking, you can have your resume done and ready to send off in less time than it would take to hire a resume writer.

If you’re struggling to create bullet points: Use a bullet point generator

Still stuck with a resume that reads more like a job description than a list of achievements? This bullet point builder tool can help you generate custom bullet points that focus on your actual accomplishments and give you access to suggested bullet points from similar roles.

If you want expert feedback: Use a resume checker

Not all professional advice costs money. If you already have a resume that just needs a bit of an update, upload it to Score My Resume . This AI-powered resume checker will scan your resume for the same things recruiters are looking for — relevant skills and keywords, concrete accomplishments, readability, and lack of filler. It can even analyze things like length, brevity, and word choice, giving you an easy-to-understand score along with easy ways to improve.

On the topic of relevant skills and keywords, use the skills search tool below to get a list of keywords and hard skills relevant to the job you’re applying for. It is a good way to tailor your resume to the job without needing to pay a resume writer.

If you want a professional service: Go pro

Resume Worded Pro gives you access to professional-level resume writing help, including targeted, resume-ready accomplishments and metrics, personalized additions, line-by-line analysis, and recruiter insights on your existing resume. TopResume  »

TopResume

Offers free resume reviews

60-day interview guarantee

Able to customize resumes by industry

2x more interviews or will rewrite resume for free

Limit of two revisions

Results might be disappointing if not willing to buy highest-priced package

TopResume is a popular service providing free critiques of existing resumes and a relatively low starting cost for a new and customized resume. The process works by first having you answer a detailed questionnaire and then matching you with an experienced professional knowledgeable of your industry who assists with customizing your resume accordingly. TopResume employs a network of 1,200 writers.

Your document gets carefully written to pass through applicant tracking systems, or ATS, to provide the best chance of getting your documents in front of a hiring manager and increasing your interview odds. In addition to resumes, TopResume also writes cover letters and LinkedIn biographies. You should expect your first draft back within a week. TopResume offers a maximum of two rewrites.

While TopResume aims to get things right the first time, the service provides up to two rewrites if you aren’t satisfied with the result; while this is a good start, those in highly specialized or less common fields may not have access to as wide a pool of experts as others. If you are willing to pay top dollar for the most expensive plan, your access to writers with specialist knowledge will likely expand.

TopResume’s pricing plans work for professionals at all levels, making it the ideal service for the broadest range of job searchers.

TheMuse

Free resume templates and samples

Coaching is available for as low as $56

Options for all career levels

Job board with positions across various industries

Not a straightforward resume writing service

Slightly longer turnaround window than alternatives

In addition to tailored resumes, TheMuse provides coaching sessions, updated LinkedIn bios, and more. The service offers a combination of services meant to fit every budget and level of need. It’s easy to select only the features you need and avoid overpaying.

Although TheMuse provides valuable resume writing services, it does emphasize its coaching services over its resume and cover letter resources. TheMuse also works to update your existing documents instead of aiming to provide a resume built from scratch. If you already have a good foundation to work from, these services can be very useful for polish, but you may want to consider another service on this list if you are looking to start from the ground up.

Also be aware that you must be mindful of any errors in the draft as, aside from correcting spelling and grammar, no refunds get issued for final resumes or cover letters. You may be entitled to a single rewrite or unlimited rewrites depending on the service package you select. However, if you are simply displeased with the final version of the product for non-grammatical reasons, then it’s unlikely a refund will get issued.

Federal Resume USA  »

Federal Resume USA

Plans are specifically available for those seeking government jobs

Also provides resume services for military spouses

Plan options for veterans

Range of affordable plan options

Website is a bit dated

Payment plans and pricing a little confusing

Federal Resume USA is a resume writing service that is specifically tailored towards supporting those seeking government and military positions. It differs from practically every other resume writing business reviewed in that it is primarily government-focused. Federal Resume USA works with customers trying to obtain a government job or who are transferring away from federal and military roles and need a civilian or private sector-friendly resume. The pricing varies from around $100 for a critique to $300 for resumes tailored toward GS-14, GS-15, and SES PO positions, putting the pricing plans within the budget of most potential customers.

Though Federal Resume USA may be a service that is ideal for government job seekers, it is hard to ignore how dated the website is. It can be hard to distinguish one pricing plan from the next, raising the risk of customers accidentally opting for the wrong plan. Though the pages lack a modern charm, the service is well-suited to customers who want writers specifically familiar with creating resumes for federal government and military jobs.

The Bottom Line

Resume writing services remain a valuable resource for job hunting, whether you are unemployed or presently employed and seeking a move elsewhere. For those lacking resume writing experience, these services can help you connect with someone able to take your work experience or accomplishments and present them in a streamlined manner while representing your best qualities.

Unlike utilizing AI alone, working with a person or team of people allows you to prep for interviews, acknowledge and work on any professional setbacks, and get used to comfortably collaborating with other people. The best resumes go beyond SEO and keywords – they empower you to self-advocate. The best resume writing services empower and coach you in ways only possible when humans are involved.

What Are Resume Writing Services and How Do They Work?

A resume writing service provides editing, rewriting, and proper formatting of a resume, or the creation of a resume from scratch. The providers typically use professional writers who understand the importance of keyword placement and know how to tailor your resume to the job or industry you’re applying for.

Many resume writing services offer more than a resume update and can often provide cover letter assistance, thank you notes, coaching, LinkedIn profile evaluations, and other job-seeking services.

While each provider may have a slightly different process, when you hire a resume writing service, you’ll have to first submit your current resume (if you have one) to get matched to a professional writer. You’ll also need to provide your career goals and industry, plus any other information the service provider requests.

Most services provide a time frame of when you can expect your first draft for your review. Once you receive it, you can go over any changes needed or start submitting it for your job applications.

How Much Do Resume Writing Services Cost?

There’s a significant range in cost for resume writing services, so it’s essential to have a clear understanding of what’s included in the service before paying for it. For instance, the cost of the providers featured in our top picks starts at $99, but many can reach several hundred dollars, especially for executive-level resume writing.

Most offer a starting price that includes a more basic package but then increases in cost if you select add-on services such as cover letters, coaching, or interview prepping.

Pros and Cons of Resume Writing Services

Hiring a professional resume writing service can help you get noticed, but it does require an investment. Consider the advantages and disadvantages of using this type of service before committing.

Receive a professionally written resume

Resume will include keywords that increase the likelihood of getting picked up by a potential employer

Can tailor your resume to a specific role or industry in a professional manner

Writer has expertise and insight into hiring trends and best resume practices

Requires a monetary investment

Must put in time and effort for providing resume details, filling out a questionnaire, or interviewing the writer

Writer may not capture your voice in the resume, making it feel impersonal

How To Choose a Resume Writing Service

Look for a resume writing service that is open about its writers’ qualifications. The writers may have expertise with certain industries or types of job seekers (such as entry level or executive level). You can also look for writers with professional designations, perhaps through the National Resume Writer’s Association (NRWA) or the Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches (PARWCC), which are widely respected.

The more features the writing service offers, the higher the price. However, you may receive a valuable series of services that will strongly assist you in finding a new job that would be a good value for your investment. Look for service providers with upfront pricing and clear details regarding what’s included.

At the most basic level, a resume writing service includes a draft of a re-written (or newly created) keyword-optimized resume plus a round of revisions. Many packages also include valuable add-on services such as:

  • Cover letters
  • Thank you notes
  • An interview guarantee
  • LinkedIn profile update

You may prefer using a service skilled in balancing the time-saving benefits of AI-generated content and adding a human touch to your resume. Or you may want a service doing the bare minimum amount utilizing AI. Look for information on a resume writing service’s website regarding how they use AI, or ask directly.

The turnaround period refers to the time it takes a service to receive your questionnaire, existing resume, or instructions, and then send a first draft. The average time among top-tier resume writing services is typically seven to 10 business days, though it depends on the writer’s experience, the type of resume work requested, or their workload.

If you are in a hurry, check to see if the resume writing service will expedite the process, but be prepared to pay an extra fee for rush service.

You may find a resume writing service uses the same formatting and fonts for each resume, which can make it difficult for you to stand out among the competition. Instead, look for a service that provides custom resumes and takes a personal yet professional approach when formatting your documents.

Best Resume Writing Services: What Users Are Saying

To get opinions on resume writing services, we surveyed 100 people who self-reported experience using it. We then asked them to identify the most important features when using these services and rank those features on a scale of 1-5, with one being the most important and five the least. Finally, we asked participants to provide a short story or other concerns they had when using a resume writing service.

The majority of respondents (73%) reported that price is important when considering a resume writing service, with customizations (72%) and user-friendliness (56%) following. Customer service and support (56%) came after that, with success rate (48%) rounding out the top features list. Unique features was indicated as the least important feature, with 34% of respondents selecting it.

While most comments were about ensuring the service tailors resumes to the individual and makes them eye-catching and enticing to employers, one respondent highlighted that it’s a plus “If they have some experience working in the field you are pursuing.” Another one supported this, adding, “It is important to me to know that the writer has written for someone in my industry so they have a better understanding of my experience.”

Alternatives to Resume Writing Services

A resume writing service can offer plenty of advantages for job seekers, but it’s not the only option available. Other resume writing choices include:

  • AI-generated resumes: You can feed personal information such as work experience, education, skills, and any other relevant information you want to include into ChatGPT and the program can generate a resume. While it’s a quick, budget-friendly option, it will likely not sound as personal and may not have the keyword optimization needed to get noticed.
  • Use a marketplace: Freelance marketplace options such as Upwork and Fiverr offer an enormous number of writers who charge a flat fee for creating a resume, similar to hiring a resume writing service. However, they may not have the industry knowledge you’re looking for or include as many benefits as a professional resume writing service might.
  • Free templates: An online search for free resume writing tips will yield overwhelming results, but they may provide you with enough help so you can pull together a resume on your own. In addition to free advice, you can also find free templates in numerous places including Canva, Microsoft Word, or Google Docs.

How We Chose the Best Resume Writing Services

At U.S. News 360 Reviews, our writers and editors combined consultations with industry experts, including a former recruiter and executive-level resume writer, with in-depth research to curate a list of high-quality resume writing services. We formulated a methodology based on the most relevant features job seekers often look to when deciding on a reliable resume writing service.

We considered affordability and value for the money, turnaround time, customization, and even what services are best according to where one finds oneself in their career path. With these features in mind, we narrowed our list down according to the resume writing services we felt best fit each category and so are most suited to your specific needs.

WHY SHOULD YOU TRUST US?

The contributors and editors who compile our 360 Reviews round-ups have years of experience researching, testing, and reviewing products. Sara Coleman , one of the authors of this piece and a contributor for 360 Reviews, has more than seven years of experience writing for multiple consumer and business publications, in addition to reviewing a wide range of business products.

Toni Matthews-El, the co-author of this article, has years of experience drafting resumes and cover letters. She not only wrote and critiqued resumes for numerous clients, but she also earned a professional branding certification through Randstad RiseSmart.

A high-caliber resume writing service can bring a professional quality to your resume. The resume writers have likely spent years mastering what it takes for your resume to stand out to recruiters and what information the hiring manager needs to know. Plus, they can make sure your achievements jump off the page.

While you can find plenty of free advice and free resume templates, it can be worth it to invest in a writing service that will help you stand out from the competition. Hiring a service can ensure you have both the necessary keywords to ensure yours is noticed by resume screening software and that it makes a professional first impression.

Chances are if you’re using a free resume writing service, it’s using AI-generated content. When you work with a resume writing service, you’ll likely be working with at least one human throughout the process. Keep in mind that top-tier resume services are increasingly using AI as part of the writing process, and it may help in certain situations such as speeding up time to completion or reducing cost.

Some companies offer help with cover letters as an option within a package, while others strictly offer resume writing services. It’s a good idea to look for a service offering both, since companies often request both a resume and cover letter during the application process.

If you don’t like the draft you’ve received, make notes and highlight the areas of concern, such as spelling or grammatical errors, incorrect information, formatting, or anything else. You can ask for correction but do take note of how many rewrites the writing service includes in their packages. You may also be entitled to a full refund, depending on the writing service’s refund policy.

A lot of job seekers ask me, “Should I hire a resume writer ?” or, “Are resume writing services worth it?”

You want to know the pros and cons before you invest your hard-earned money, and I don’t blame you!

So in this article, I’ll explain:

  • When it’s worth paying for a resume writing service (and when you might not need to)
  • What a professional resume writer actually does, and how much they help
  • How much you can expect to pay if you hire a good resume writer

I’ll also share the writing service that I recommend… and they also offer a free tool that you can use to measure the strength of your resume before paying anything. So make sure you read until the end.

Let’s get started…

What Does a Resume Writer Do?

A resume writer gathers employment information from you (via phone call, online form, or email) and creates or updates your resume in preparation for your job search. The primary purpose of your resume is to get job interviews, and the professional writer designs your resume to do this. They may also offer additional services like cover letters and LinkedIn writing.

Benefits of Using a Professional Resume Writer

The main benefits of hiring a resume writer are saving time, saving frustration and hassle, removing the guesswork from the writing process, and likely completing the document faster and better, so you can get more interviews in less time.

However, it’s possible to write a stand-out resume on your own. There’s enough information available on the web for you to learn it, if you’re willing to dedicate the time.

If you’re interested in learning, our site has a lot of resources available on this page , written from my experience as a recruiter .

How Much Does it Cost to Have Someone Write Your Resume?

The average cost of resume writing is $527, with many services priced even higher. However there are a couple of budget-friendly services online that are still thorough and effective. Our top choice, if you’re not looking to spend too much, is TopResume. Their services begin at $149.

If you are a Senior Manager, Executive, or other more-experienced professional or have a higher budget, then you should review our full list of recommended resume writers.

Deciding: Should I Hire a Resume Writer?

The decision of whether you should use a professional writing service comes down to: Are you willing to spend the time and energy to learn this skill? And how quickly do you need everything completed? Because it is a unique skill that takes time to develop.

You’ll have to step into the hiring manager’s shoes and understand what they’re looking for, and why. This could be the hardest part to master without hiring a professional.

So to recap… if you have a lot of time and willingness to learn, then it’s possible to write a great resume on your own.

And it’s a good option if you have a very limited budget and don’t want to spend any money.

However, if you want to short-cut the process and use a bit of money to save a lot of time, then it’s worth it to get a professional writer to help you.

And if you already have a resume but aren’t sure if it’s good or not, you can use this free tool  by TopResume to measure how strong your resume is before deciding.

When You Should Hire a Resume Writer: Specific Scenarios

There are a few types of people who can benefit most from hiring a professional resume writer in their job search.

Here’s who this makes the MOST sense for:

  • You’re busy and simply don’t have time to do all the research and learning necessary to create a winning resume on your own
  • You’ve tried writing your own resume in the past but didn’t get interviews.
  • You have a complicated background or are changing careers and you need someone who can organize a complex work history and “tailor” it for the job you want next.
  • You can afford to pay for professional help, see it as a good investment, and would rather use a bit of money instead of your personal time

So that’s who I think can benefit most from paying for resume writing services.

Situations Where You Might Not Want to Pay for a Resume

If money is tight and/or you have plenty of time to learn this skill on your own, and want to give it a shot yourself, then you absolutely should.

I wrote my own resume throughout most of my career, and while I struggled at the start, I ended up getting a lot of interviews later in my career by packing the document with facts/metrics, and removing vague phrases like “hard-working” and “team-oriented”.

It was a learning process, though. This won’t work if you’re not going to study/learn what hiring managers look for and how they decide which people to interview.

If you can’t commit to that, then I’d just use an affordable resume service like TopResume to get your resume done professionally.

So, I don’t think anyone NEEDS to hire a professional writer if they don’t want to. However, it saves a lot of hassles, and it’s a fastlane to getting your resume done quickly and effectively to remove a lot of the guesswork from the process.

It can also be an investment that pays for itself. If you end up with a better resume, or one that’s done a few weeks sooner, then you can potentially find a job faster.

So that’s another good reason to invest in something like this. The final decision depends on your free time, financial situation, and willingness to learn a new skill, though.

If you want to know how strong your resume is right now before making a decision, I recommend this free resume review tool by TopResume.

Conclusion: Are Resume Writers Worth It? And Should You Hire a Resume Writer?

If you read everything above, you know how to decide whether you should hire a resume writer or learn to write everything on your own. Both options are valid, and both come with pros and cons depending on your situation (mainly the trade-off between time and money).

Resume writing services aren’t free, but assuming you choose a good resume writer, you could get job offers faster (since the document is being written immediately instead of you having to spend weeks learning and practicing first). This means you’ll find a new job faster in most cases.

However, if you learn this skill, then you won’t need to hire a professional resume writer in any future job searches, so it may be worth learning if you have the time.

Great advice! I changed countries and industries a couple of times and while I acquired a lot of marketing & management skills, I did not know how to write a CV and land myself a job In Australia.

I engaged the services of a pro (based in London) and the CV I got was too scary and pompous for Australia! I was not getting any interviews! I had it rewritten by a HR specialist a bit plain but I was at least able to get 2 interviews and a job. Back unemplyed after a medical condition, my CV was again re-written by a HR “specialist” (paid by the government) it was shockingly basic. I could never use that. I think the only one that can write that CV is still me.

Choosing a Resume Writing Service: What to Look For

10 min read · Updated on November 07, 2024

Choose the best resume writing service for job-search success.

So, you're thinking about investing in your career with a professionally written resume. It's definitely worth considering since your resume is the single most important tool in your job search arsenal to help you get noticed and land interviews. In this post, we cover the pros and cons of hiring a resume writing service, the questions you should ask before securing one, and a final checklist to help guide you.

Should you have your resume written for you?

Unless you're a professional resume writer or you have a resume that's already landing you interviews , hiring a resume writer is likely in your best interest. Let's take a look at some of the pros and cons of hiring a resume writer.

Resume writing service pros

By hiring a resume writer, you're in a position to benefit from the following:

You'll have a competitive resume compared to other candidates who might have also hired a resume writing service.

You'll increase your chances of landing interviews .

A professional resume writer knows how to write a resume to get past those pesky applicant tracking systems. If your resume doesn't get past an ATS, it won't be seen by human readers.

You'll save a lot of time not having to write the resume yourself. Not to mention, you won't have to stress as to whether it's good enough to land interviews.

Job search costs, including hiring a resume writer, are often tax deductible. Refer to a tax specialist or the IRS to clarify if this would be the case for you.

Resume writing service cons

Now, let's look at some of the costs and risks associated with hiring a resume writer:

You'll have to pay for the service.

If you like to maintain control over the entire process, hiring a resume writer might be an uncomfortable choice.

You'll need to set some time aside to answer questions either by email, messaging, or phone call.

You'll need to do some research to sift through the good and not-so-good writers or services.

You run the risk of not loving your resume or it not sounding like you. However, if you do your research to find a reputable writing service, this isn't typical.

As you can see, for many candidates, the pros outweigh the cons when it comes to hiring a resume writer to help you craft your resume.

What to look for in a resume writing service

Now that you've decided to hire a resume writing service, what's next? Well, before you fork over some of your hard-earned cash, make sure you find the resume-writing service that's right for you. Ask yourself the following questions before choosing the perfect service to help you land your dream job, faster.

Is this a reputable group?

How long has the organization been in business? Do they have a good reputation in the industry? Look for things like video testimonials and customer success stories that illustrate the work the group is capable of. You can also get a sense of their experience within the industry by reviewing their information in the “ About Us ” or “Company History” sections of their site.

Do they offer competitive pricing?

Not everyone can afford the $1000+ price tag that some companies charge for career coaching and resume-writing services. Take a look at your finances and determine what type of help you're looking for and what you feel comfortable spending.

In terms of how much you can expect to pay, as you do your homework, you'll see that there are resume-writing services available at just about every price point . The range for having your resume written can start around $99 and go upwards of a few hundred dollars.

That said, just because a resume writing service costs hundreds of dollars doesn't necessarily mean they're better writers or that you'll receive a better quality resume. It's possible to receive a high-quality resume that lands you interviews for under $200.

What will I get for my money?

Ideally, you want to have some sort of free resume evaluation or consultation, which may occur before you purchase a resume rewrite, and then the right to edit a draft version before finalizing the document with your writer.

Many services will also include a customizable cover letter, a LinkedIn makeover, or some other service with their resume packages. If you haven't searched for a job in a while or don't know what to put on your LinkedIn profile , you may want to consider purchasing one of these all-inclusive packages to spruce up your entire personal brand.

Will my writer be knowledgeable about my field or industry?

While it's not always possible to find a resume writer who's worked in your industry, it is important to be on the lookout for one who has at least worked on resumes for other professionals in your line of work. Ask about their experience in your field or line of work to be sure, and keep looking if you're not satisfied with their answer.

How familiar will the writer be with keywords?

Every profession has its own set of jargon, acronyms, certifications, and skill sets that describe their work and industry. Applicant tracking systems (ATS) are programmed to look for these resume keywords to rank your application and determine if you're a good fit for the role.

Good resume writers should understand how applicant tracking systems work and how to optimize your resume with relevant keywords so that it's ATS-friendly.

Do they offer any guarantees?

Many professional resume-writing services will not offer any guarantees, as it's impossible to guarantee someone a job offer – there are just too many variables the writer can't control once they hand over the final draft of your resume. That said, there are services out there that will rewrite your resume for free if you don't receive 2x more interviews within 60 days of receiving your final copy.

Is this service a good fit for my needs?

Every resume-writing service works a little differently. The key is to find out how the process works with each service and determine which approach best suits your needs. For instance, if you don't have a lot of free time on your hands, you may want to partner with a service that allows you to submit all your information online and work with your writer via email.

If you hate to type, don't like email, and like to do everything over the phone, an online service is probably not the right fit for you.

Choosing a resume writing service checklist

Here, we summarize and reiterate some of the key takeaways noted above, with additional insights to ponder. Consider this list your go-to checklist when researching various resume writing services.

Look beyond cost . Don't let cost be the main or only factor you consider when securing a resume writer. Yes, as mentioned, you want an affordable option. However, you also want a reliable option based on reviews, examples, guarantees, and the other factors outlined below.

Seek out a free consultation or initial review. Many services will offer a free resume review to help you kick off the process and determine if it's worth upgrading to a paid service. During the review, you'll get a sense of the service provider and the value they can add if you should choose to upgrade.

Research reviews and testimonials . No matter how good a resume writing service appears to be based on its website and packages, it's how it helps people that's most important. Research online reviews and testimonials to find out what people are saying about the resume writer and service. Though it's not possible to please everyone, the majority of reviews should speak to how much value the service added to the job search process.

Consider their experience level. Seek out resume writers who have been in the business for a while and have a solid reputation as experts in the field.

Look for examples of their work. Many resume writing services will already showcase samples of their work on their website. If they don't, it's worth asking for some resume samples to verify their resume writing skills. Bear in mind that you'll likely only see general samples, as confidentiality can prevent service providers from sharing actual resumes that include a client's name and information.

Search for guarantees. As previously mentioned, resume writing services generally won't guarantee you land a job, given the many variables that go into receiving a job offer. However, reputable services do often offer some type of guarantee in terms of increasing your number of interviews.

Be clear on the revision process. Revisions are a necessary part of the resume writing service to ensure you get the final product that you feel good about and will land you interviews. That said, another important item to consider when seeking out a resume writing service is what their revision process is like. Are they willing to revise your resume to the point that you're happy with it, or do they only offer a limited amount of revisions, regardless of how you feel about the final result? Be clear on the revision parameters and choose a provider that you trust will work with you until you get a product you're satisfied with.

Consider package options. In addition to writing a resume, having a cover letter written and your LinkedIn profile updated as you move forward in your job search can be beneficial. Look for resume writing services that offer package options that include all of these items, so you have a one-stop-shop access point for all your needs vs. purchasing items piecemeal. Plus, when you work with a single provider for all your job marketing materials, the provider will apply consistent parameters across all items, so they complement each other as they should.

Seek out credentialed writers. When you're considering various resume writers, check to see what type of credentials they have. Reputable resume writing services hire writers with the right credentials to help you get the best resume possible. Some resume writers hold credentials like Certified Professional Career Coach (CPCC), Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW), and Certified Workforce Development Professional (CWDP). However, a resume writer can have many other credentials that speak to their expertise, like a history working in recruiting, human resources, and other specialized areas to support career guidance and resume writing.

Go with your gut. At the end of the day, you need to feel good about the service you choose. When taking into consideration all of the factors listed above, what is the best resume writing service to meet your needs?

Resume writing services are worth it

Remember, sometimes you need to spend money to make money. Don't think of this purchase as a cost. Instead, consider it an investment in your career. The less time it takes you to land your next job, the more money you'll earn over the course of your career.

When it comes to your job search, you want to make sure you're getting the expert help you deserve. That's where TopResume comes in. And if you're not quite ready to hire a resume writing service, you can always submit your resume for a free resume review , and go from there!

Resume writing service

Would you consider a resume writer as an investment in your career?

As most job seekers understand all too well, the resume creation process is anything but simple. Many people spend days or weeks trying to perfect their resumes. And don’t fool yourself: that quest for perfection is key since your resume is the single most important tool in your job search arsenal.

But are resume services worth it?

If you’ve been considering working with a resume writing service, this article is for you!

What is a resume writer?

Many people are surprised to find that they can hire someone to write their resume for them. After all, a resume is a pretty personal document! But in an increasingly competitive job market, job seekers are turning to the experts to help them achieve faster results from their job search.

Resume writers are professionals who work with you to create a bespoke job search document that aligns your skills, experience, and qualifications with your career objectives and the specific requirements of the industry and roles you’re targeting. Resume writers have read hundreds if not thousands of resumes and know what is boring, tired, unimpressive, or otherwise undesirable in a resume. They also know what grabs attention and what employers are looking for.

Of course, there’s a cost involved. So, are resume services worth it? There’s a lot to consider and that’s what we’re delving into in this article. We’ll look at why you may want to take this step and the different types of service out there, so that you can make an informed decision.

Why hire a resume-writing service?

The first question you need to ask yourself is why you might want to hire a professional resume-writing service. Did you know that hiring managers have become adept at filtering out bad resumes, and, on average, they only spend a few seconds on the initial scan of each document? A professional resume writing service is there to ensure that your valuable skills and experiences are properly conveyed to recruiters and your prospective employer.

Top reasons for working with a resume-writing service

Job seekers turn to resume writers for a variety of reasons, but they all come down to one thing: wanting to present the very best version of themselves to prospective employers. We’ve gathered some of the top reasons people give when they’re weighing up the answer to, “Are resume services worth it?”

They haven’t written a resume for years

Often, job seekers have been headhunted into roles based on recommendations from former colleagues, or they’ve been with the same employer for many years. Unfortunately, the job market is ever-changing – and so are resume best practices! What worked 20 years ago is unlikely to make the cut today – and that’s where professional resume writers can fill the gap.

They have too much information to fit into a concise document

Once you’re settled into your career, the experience starts to stack up. You gain more skills, you attend courses, and you move into new roles… you’ve got an awful lot to fit onto the standard two pages !

Professional resume writers are a lifeline in this situation. They know what to include, what to ditch, and what to rephrase more concisely so that you’re presenting your sales brochure rather than your life story.

They’re overwhelmed with online advice

Are resume services worth it when there’s so much information and so many resources available online? Interestingly, that’s one of the main reasons that people DO hire resume writers. The amount of information available online, much of it conflicting, can be overwhelming. And none of it is tailored to your personal situation. A resume writer will cut through the noise to create a document that will bear witness to you and your needs.

They need a resume for a specific role

However long you spend crafting the perfect resume, it isn’t a one-size-fits-all document. Your master resume will need to be tweaked for each individual role you apply for so that it shows exactly how you meet the specific needs of each employer. Whether you have your master resume ready to go and need it tailored to a specific role , or you need help creating the master resume to tweak yourself, there’s a resume writer with the expertise to do that.

They’re short on time

Let’s face it, writing a resume is a time-consuming task and not one that many people relish. If you’d rather dedicate your free time to job hunting, interview prep, or the latest box set, that’s fine! Let your resume writer take the strain while you spend your time doing what you need to do.

They’re not getting responses from their existing resume

So you thought your resume was the bee's knees, but the responses you get from sending it out say otherwise. When you’re not getting interviews for jobs you could do standing on your head in the dark; it’s time for some expert input.

What type of resume-writing service is best?

You’ll soon find that there are different types of resume-writing services available, so you’ll need to decide which option works best for you. As you might imagine, they each offer different levels of service, and the prices can vary dramatically.

Resume Factories

Be wary of resume factories, or “resume mills” as they’re sometimes called. These services often employ people with little professional resume knowledge. Many of their writers are inexperienced or may even lack proficiency in your native language. In addition, the companies behind these operations generally fail to provide the type of professional guidelines those writers would need to optimize their resumes properly.

Make no mistake: this type of resume-writing service is almost never worth the money you pay. If you do get a product back, it tends to be incomprehensible or rely on creative resume formats to disguise the fact that there is very little content.

You can spot these resume writer services by looking for these 3 things:

Promises that you’ll land a job – resumes win interviews

No phone number to contact

No examples of resumes they've written

Template services or resume builders

A resume template service cannot technically qualify as a resume-writing service at all. We’ve included it here, however, to note that they exist since you are likely to encounter them if you’re looking for a service. These operations tend to be a mixed bag, so there is always a risk when you use them.

Basically, they don’t actually write resumes at all. Instead, a resume builder provides one or more templates for you to enter all your work history details, and then the service creates a resume based on the template. If this is what you're looking for, here are 12 popular resume builders .

The costs are usually reasonable (if hidden), but the results can often be all but useless. As a rule, this option is only useful if you just want to get your basic resume details on record and plan to deliver the resume directly to the person who makes the hiring decisions. If you're using this resume for online applications, you risk getting overlooked by the applicant tracking system software due to formatting errors.

For example, if the resume template puts your contact information in the header or footer of a document, an ATS often won’t see it. If you’re still wondering, “Are resume builders worth it?” We’d say, “Probably not.”

Certified Professional Resume Writers

Your best option will always be to rely on true professionals. The best resume writing services will have qualified, experienced resume writers on staff. These professionals will be able to take your important information and craft a relevant, effective resume that provides the branding you need to stand out from the crowd. They also understand what hiring managers and recruiters want to see on a resume in 2024.

As you might expect, though, resume writers will require more time and more money because they are true experts. The process also requires greater collaboration from you. Hiring a resume writer means you are involved at different stages of the process. The writer will need to clarify details and ask for your complete trust that the final product satisfies current industry standards and your job seeking needs.

You can find a certified professional resume writer on platforms like LinkedIn or use a trusted service with a wide network of writers. LinkedIn resume writers’ costs can vary wildly, but you’ll have a huge range to choose from and are bound to find one in your region or industry. Our team researched over 200 resume service offers and came up with a list of the top 10 resume writing services for all industries.

Services and individual resume writers come in all shapes and sizes, so research a few different services to see which one best meets your personal needs.

Tips for hiring a resume writer

There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of resume writers out there for you to choose from. So how can you be sure you’re choosing the best? Well, it really comes down to what you, as an individual, need.

Services. Some writers provide only a resume. Others offer cover letters and LinkedIn profiles, too. Others still offer career coaching or interview support. Select one that offers the services you need, and make sure you’re not paying for those you don’t.

Contact. How would you prefer to work with your writer? From web forms and email to phone consultations and Zoom chats, your communication preferences matter, so find someone who can accommodate your wishes.

Speed. If you want to apply for a role that closes this week, you’ll need to find a resume-writing service that offers expedited delivery. On the other hand, if you’re planning ahead, you could save money by opting for a standard turnaround time.

Budget. You’ll find a huge variation in the cost of resume services. Make sure the one you choose can offer the service you expect at a price-point you find acceptable.

Qualifications. Anyone can set themselves up as a resume writer, so you’ll need to research the service you intend to use. How long have they been in business? Do they have positive reviews and testimonials? Are they accredited by an industry body? Make sure you’re confident with their credentials before parting with any money.

So, are resume services worth it?

The answer to this question all boils down to one basic truth: your resume matters.

Now, if you’re a competent writer and have the time to learn what it takes to create an effective resume, then you probably don’t need to hire a resume writing service. However, if you have little experience with professional writing, then you almost certainly need a resume-writing service to help you create a winning resume so you can secure job interviews and land your dream job.

As noted, resume factories and templates can be of questionable value. A professional resume writing service, though, is more than just a means to an end. It is an investment in your job search efforts and your future and could be the key to achieving your ultimate career goals.

You get what you pay for, obviously. The key to ensuring that your resume writing service is worth the cost is to choose wisely. Find a well-known, reputable company that actively works with you to craft the perfect resume for your needs. When you can do that, your resume will almost certainly be worth the money you paid.

And when you consider the return on that investment, the costs for a professional writer are minimal indeed!

If you’re not sure whether you need to invest in a professional resume writing service, why not send your resume for a free, no-obligation review by our experts? With our feedback, you’ll have the information you need to decide whether to invest or whether your efforts hit the mark.
