One way to identify slow learners is by taking an IQ (Intelligence Quotient) test. However, at schools in rural areas, facilities for carrying out IQ tests are complicated to obtain and usually can only be done in big cities. Even though student identification is essential before students enroll in elementary schools, it is to determine student abilities, so students can later be facilitated according to their learning needs. This research is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach that aims to identify slow learners in rural schools. The participants were all students in four schools in one village in Indonesia. Data were obtained through teacher interviews, sorting student report card scores, observing the learning process, and administering tests. The results showed that based on interviews with teachers, sorting students' report cards, observing the learning process, and giving tests, 17 students were identified as slow learners. They are six female students and 11 male students. In addition to using the IQ test, slow learner identification can be made by interviewing teachers, looking at student report cards, observing the learning process in class, and giving tests to students. This way, each teacher can quickly identify each student, which will significantly help teachers in rural schools.

The issue of slow learners has remained a concern for educators due to the burdens on school systems and the social and academic consequences to the learners themselves. An understanding of learning behaviours and cognitive characteristics of slow learners together with their social and educational environment facilitates appropriate intervention strategies. This paper reports part of the findings from a three-year study conducted to identify and support slow learners in learning mathematics at primary schools in Vietnam. Findings indicate both home-and school-based barriers to the academic success of slowlearning students, which highlights the need for individualised support and tailored teaching.

Several studies have been carried out to uncover errors made by students in solving mathematical problems. However, there are few studies related to this kind of research specializing in students with special needs, in this case, slow learners, especially in Indonesia. In addition, the study did not classify the errors into the category of mathematical errors, so the location of the errors was not mapped. This study aimed to describe the performance of slow learners in solving mathematical problems, which are analyzed by the locations of errors based on the Newman procedure and categorized by Elbrink’s classification. This study also aimed to reveal the causes of errors made by slow learners in solving mathematical problems by confirming the characteristics of slow learners. The subject of this research was two eighth-graders who are considered slow learners in an inclusive junior high school. The data were collected through written tasks and semi-structured interviews. The results ...

Slow learners need specific attention and education services that suit their condition and situation for them to develop their abilities just like other normal children. Teacher roles can become a significant factor in dealing with slow learners, especially in the learning process. The research aims to find out the teacher roles, as well as the inhibiting and supporting factors in dealing with slow learners at SD Muhammadiyah Danugeran in Yogyakarta. The research is qualitative, with a case study approach. The subjects of the study were the school principal, class teachers, and students chosen using the purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The collected data was analyzed using an interactive inductive data analysis technique, a model proposed by Miles and Huberman. The result suggests that teachers at SD Muhammadiyah Danunegaran have carried out their roles as demonstrators, class managers, initiators, facilitators, me...

This study aims to find out how teachers diagnose to determine students’ learning difficulties, especially in Mathematics in Elementary Schools. There are four aspects discussed in this study, including the teachers’ perception of students’ learning difficulties, teachers’ practice in connection with diagnosing students’ learning difficulties, teachers’ actions in response to the results of the diagnosis, parties involved regarding students’ learning difficulties. The research method used was descriptive qualitative with 13 teachers as the subject selected by purposive sampling. The data were obtained through interviews with classroom teachers, both from private and public schools, especially in North Borneo. The findings in this study show that the teachers use various ways to diagnose and overcome students’ learning difficulties. There are 3 ways that teachers do to diagnose learning difficulties in Mathematics, including tests, observations and interviews. While the ways to overc...

The aim of this study was to identify the causes of difficulties in learning mathematics for students at the primary level. For this purpose, I selected a primary school in Ru Ru 04 of Gulmi District. I selected four students studying in Lamakharka Jhamadi primary school at grade five by applying purposive sampling. I used phenomenology within qualitative research design. I triangulated the collected data from students, teachers, and the parents of respective students. From this study, I found that language differences, parent’s carelessness, low economic status, an unfavorable school environment, and a lack of practice at home are the main causes of learning difficulties for students in mathematics.

The purpose of this research is to identify which aspect of the mathematics connection of inclusion class, especially slow learner student face. The subject of the research is 10 seventh grade slow learner in YBPK Junior High School, Kediri. While the aspect mathematical connection that had been examined was the ability of student in (1) stating relationship between facts, concepts, or mathematics principle; (2) developing mathematical models of the daily life problems; (3) mentioning the concepts which underlie the solution from the given mathematical problems. The technique for data collection was taken from 3 times test, interview, and observation. Then, the researcher used technique triangulation. The data analysis was presented by reducing, pre, sensing and concluding the data. Results show that the slow learner students tend to weak in (1) can’t writing down the reasons; (2) using picture and illustration to show these problems; and (3) developing a mathematical model without ...

An increasing pool of research findings in the field of mathematics education indicate the impact of various factors like demographic, individual, instructional, classroom management and evaluation factors on mathematics achievement of the students. The present study aims to study the significant predictors in mathematics achievements among adolescents. Descriptive survey method was used as a research design for the study. The target population of the study was the students studying in senior secondary schools of Moradabad city in Uttar Pradesh (India). A sample of 123 students was randomly selected out of 5 senior secondary C.B.S.E. schools out of which 66 were males and 57 females. The study revealed that Intelligence emerged as the most significant predictor in mathematics achievement among adolescents. This is in consistent to previous researches conducted by Das (1986), Patel (1997), Kasat (1991), Abdulmajeed (1992) and Fernandez (2011), who reported positive relationship between the intelligence and mathematics achievement.

Abstract— One way to identify slow learners is with an IQ (Intelligence Quotient) test. However, in rural schools, facilities for conducting IQ tests are very difficult to obtain, usually only in big cities. Whereas student identification is very necessary before students register for elementary schools, in order to determine students' abilities, so that later students can be facilitated according to their learning needs. This research is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach that aims to identify slow learners in rural schools. The participants involved were all students in four schools in one village in Indonesia. The results showed that based on interviews with teachers, sorting student report cards, observing the learning process, and giving tests, there were 17 students identified as slow learners. Among them are 6 female students and 11 male students. In addition to the IQ test, the identification of slow learners can be done by interviewing teachers, viewing student report cards, observing the learning process in class, and giving tests to students. Thus each teacher can identify each student easily, this will be very helpful for teachers in rural schools.
