This ‘Families and Relationships’ e-Special Issue contains a selection of 10 articles previously published in Sociology. In this Introduction, we first outline the broader sub-disciplinary context and explain our selection criteria. The increased popularity of families and relationships as a focus of sociological study is reflected in the dominance of articles published in the 1990s and later. Our selection highlights the following developments within the field: the shift from the sociology of the family to a sociology of families; the debates surrounding late modernity and the individualisation thesis; increased diversity regarding types of family and kinds of issue that have been researched; and continued theoretical development that has widened the scope of study. We include reflections on how the selected articles speak to developments in the discipline at large and in the field of families and relationships, as well as what the future might hold for the field.

This dissertation explores the current forms of intimacy and their position within society. It will specifically focus on whether casual sex types, such as Friends-with-Benefits, are slowly outdating romantic exclusivity. A critical evaluation of three predominant theories relating to intimacy and relationships (Giddens, 1992; Bauman, 2003 and; Beck and Beck-Gernsheim, 1995) will be followed by a discussion and definition of the sociological, historical and anthropological construct of love and finally a sociological evaluation of sex. The primary research is a small-scale (n=71) questionnaire-based study, intended to examine attitudinal changes towards romantic love and casual sex. It found that there were many contradictions in respondents’ attitudes towards relationship-type, and that while casual sex was highly prevalent in the sample, romantic commitment (preferably loving) was the desired relationship.

This book deepens and extends the dialogue between Buddhist philosophy and 4E philosophy of mind and phenomenology. It engages with core issues in the philosophy of mind broadly construed in and through the dialogue between Buddhism and enactivism. Indian philosophers developed and defended philosophically sophisticated and phenomenologically rich accounts of mind, self, cognition, perception, embodiment, and more. As a work of cross-cultural philosophy, the book investigates the nature of mind and experience in dialogue with Indian and Western thinkers. On the basis of this cross-traditional dialogue, the book articulates and defends a dynamic, non-substantialist, and embodied account of experience, subjectivity, and self.
